When looking at adding cover crops this fall. Determine what’s best for your land and have a purpose with that decision. Are you trying to eliminate residue? Are you trying to bust compaction? Are you trying to add a biological primer? Are you trying to add Nitrogen?Your C:N ratio of your soil should be one of the first things to look at to help guide your decisions. Low CN generally means tighter soils. Higher CN generally means more trash. Match the mix your planting to the problem your dealing with. The diversity of multiple species is great but later plantings, I would suggest keeping it simple and inexpensive as we haven’t seen enough value going to 10+ mixes unless planted in early August or before.
